Field3 is a free, hand-indexed web directory built on the model of a library card catalog. Every site in the collection occupies a single accession card, assigned to one of 22 subject drawers and retrievable by any visitor without registration.
The directory was assembled to give researchers, businesses, and general browsers a structured alternative to algorithmic search. Where a search engine returns results ranked by machine inference, Field3 returns cards ranked by subject and submission order — a transparent, human-readable arrangement.
Submissions are open to all. An owner who wishes to add a site completes a short form with the domain, a title, and a category. Field3 staff review each submission before the card is stamped and filed. There is no charge for a basic listing, and the review process is designed to maintain the quality of the collection.
The 22 drawers cover the principal subjects represented in the catalog: personal services, automotive, apparel, gaming, construction, dental health, documentation, education, finance, food, furnishings, industrial equipment, legal counsel, medical care, press, general web, pet care, stationery, property, advertising, technology, and travel.
Field3 does not track visitors or require accounts. The entire catalog is openly browsable. It is maintained as a public reference in the card-catalog tradition.
